How Much Does It Cost to Register a Trademark in Colombia?

How much does it cost to register a trademark in Colombia

In Colombia, in 2026, the official filing fee to register a trademark in the first or only class is USD 410 (aprox.) when the application is filed online. If the trademark is intended to cover goods or services in additional classes, USD 205 (aprox.) must be paid for each additional class included in the same application.

These are the official fees established by the Colombian Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio - SIC). If the applicant retains professional legal counsel, the fees charged by the attorney or law firm handling the trademark registration process must be considered separately.

What are the official fees to register a trademark in Colombia?

The official online filing fees for a trademark application are:

  • First or only class: USD 410 (aprox.).
  • Each additional class included in the same application: USD 205 (aprox.).

The number of classes depends on the goods or services that the trademark is intended to identify. Accordingly, the total amount of official fees may vary depending on the scope of protection sought.

Trademarks are registered in connection with specific goods or services classified under the International Nice Classification. Accordingly, determining the appropriate class or classes is an important part of establishing the scope and cost of a trademark application.

Who determines the cost of registering a trademark?

The official fees are established by the Colombian Superintendency of Industry and Commerce, the national authority responsible for administering the industrial property system in Colombia. These fees may be updated and should therefore be verified for the year in which the application is filed.

Why does the number of classes affect the cost?

A trademark registration does not provide indiscriminate protection for every product or service. The application must identify the specific goods or services for which protection is sought and classify them in accordance with the International Nice Classification.

For example, if an application covers goods or services falling within a single class, the fee corresponding to the first or only class applies. If the application covers several classes, the corresponding additional-class fees must also be paid.

For this reason, before filing an application, it is important to determine correctly which goods or services actually require trademark protection. Proper classification helps define the scope of the application and accurately establish the official fees payable.

Does the cost include attorneys’ fees?

No. The amounts stated above correspond exclusively to the official fees payable for the proceeding before the SIC. Professional fees for trademark clearance searches, registrability assessments, preparation and filing of the application, and monitoring of the proceeding are separate costs.

Attorneys’ fees may vary depending on the professional or law firm retained, the number of classes, the characteristics of the trademark and the scope of the services provided.

Discounts on trademark registration fees

The SIC provides differentiated fees or benefits for certain applicants and filing categories, subject to the conditions applicable to each proceeding. These may include:

  • Artisans certified by Artesanías de Colombia.
  • Micro and small enterprises, when the applicable requirements are met.
  • Government entities.

The availability and amount of any applicable benefit should be verified in accordance with the official fees and conditions in force at the time the application is filed, as not all discounts necessarily have the same scope or apply to every applicant.

How much does it cost to register a trademark in multiple classes?

The total cost depends on the number of classes included in the application. As a general rule, the fee for the first or only class must be added to the applicable fee for each additional class.

Accordingly, before calculating the total filing cost, it is necessary to determine how many classes the trademark actually requires. Including unnecessary classes may increase the cost, while omitting relevant classes may leave important goods or services outside the scope of protection.

How long does a trademark registration remain in force?

A trademark registration in Colombia has a term of ten years from the date on which registration is granted and may be renewed for successive ten-year periods in accordance with the applicable law.

The cost of registration should therefore also be considered in light of the period during which the trademark owner obtains exclusive rights, subject to compliance with the applicable rules governing maintenance, use and renewal.

What should you consider before paying the official fees?

Payment of the official fee allows the trademark application to be filed, but does not guarantee that registration will be granted. Before commencing the proceeding, it is advisable to identify correctly the goods or services to be protected and assess whether earlier trademarks may constitute an obstacle to registration.
