Requirements to Register a Trademark in Colombia

The requirements to register a trademark in Colombia are the following:

1. Perform a trademark search in order to verify that the mark of your interest is not registered.

Before starting the registration application of a trademark in Colombia, it is recommended to conduct a phonetic and graphic background search, in order to know if there are obstacles to the registration.

2. Pay the official fees established by the Colombian IPO.

To access the trademark registration application, the Superintendent’s Office of Industry and Trade annually sets an official rate.

For the year 2024, the official rates of the SIC for the online trademark registration procedure are the following:

• Application for trademark registration (first or only class) $1.219.000 Colombian Pesos.
• Application for trademark registration (additional class in the same application) $609.500 Colombian Pesos.

3. Fill out the trademark application form.

For the purposes of initiating the registration process of a trademark in Colombia, the applicant must fill out a form, which contains the following information:

• Data of the applicant requesting the trademark registration, which can either be a corporation, a legal entity or a natural person.
• The name of the trademark to be registered.
• The class of the Nice International Classification corresponding to the products or services to be identified.
• The description of the products or services that will be identified with the trademark, in detail.

4. Attach the documents required by the Colombian IPO.

It is also necessary to attach the following documents:

• Receipt of payment of official fees.
• Art or logo of the brand to be registered.
• Power of attorney.
